The areas of practice are self-designated by the attorney and should not be construed by the public as specialties similar to physicians listings. However, the North Carolina State Bar Board of Legal Specialization does certify as specialists those attorneys who have demonstrated to the Board a special knowledge, skill, and proficiency in a field of law. An attorney who has received board certification in a field of law may represent that he or she has been certified as a legal specialist.
